From Persian مرچ (morč, pepper), ultimately from Sanskrit मरिच (marica).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (murč, Piper nigrum);[1] Kazakh бұрыш (būryş), Kyrgyz мурч (murc), Uzbek murch, Turkmen burç (pepper).
