галфон
Bulgarian
editEtymology
editUncertain. There are two theories, found in normative dictionaries of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences:
- per the Bulgarian Language Dictionary, probably from Italian gaglioffone, augmentative of gaglioffo (“loutish, clumsy”);
- per the Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary, derived from глъв (glǎv, “stupid”) (dialectal), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰluwos, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰlew- (“to joke, make fun”), whence also Proto-Slavic *glumъ.
