Etymology

edit

Inherited from Old East Slavic гыря (gyrja). Cognate with Ukrainian ги́ря (hýrja), Belarusian гіря (hirja). Vasmer connects it to the root of гвор (gvor, bladder, tumor), ultimately PIE *gʷreh₂- (heavy). The phonology is difficult and may show Iranian influence (Proto-Indo-Iranian *gr̥Húš, modern Persian گران (gerân, heavy)).
