гиря
Russian
editEtymology
editInherited from Old East Slavic гыря (gyrja). Cognate with Ukrainian ги́ря (hýrja), Belarusian гіря (hirja). Vasmer connects it to the root of гвор (gvor, “bladder, tumor”), ultimately PIE *gʷreh₂- (“heavy”). The phonology is difficult and may show Iranian influence (Proto-Indo-Iranian *gr̥Húš, modern Persian گران (gerân, “heavy”)).
