Etymology

The initial element гыр- derives from Proto-Permic *gu̇r, from Proto-Uralic *küńä (elbow). Cognates include Moksha кенерь (keńeŕ) and Finnish kyynärä. The final element -пум derives from пум (pum, end). Compare with Komi-Zyrian гырддза (gyrddźa).
