Inherited from Old East Slavic звѣрь (zvěrĭ), from Proto-Slavic *zvě̑rь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źwēˀrís, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰwer-is, from *ǵʰwer-. Cognate with Russian зверь (zverʹ), Old Novgorodian ꙁвѣрь (zvěrĭ), Old Church Slavonic звѣрь (zvěrĭ).
