From *erkin (free; spacious), derived from Proto-Turkic *erik (strength, might, will, power).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (irkin, a nobility title);[1] Kumyk эркин (erkin, free), Kazakh еркін (erkın, free), Southern Altai эркин (erkin, freedom, liberty), etc.
