From Proto-Mordvinic *kenžə~*kenǯə, from Proto-Uralic *künče (nail, claw). Cognates include Finnish kynsi (kynte-), Livonian kīņtš, Eastern Mari кӱч (küč), Komi-Permyak гыж (gyž), Hungarian köröm.
