A Turkic borrowing. Compare Nogai кынжал (kınjal), Kumyk хынжал (xınjal), Crimean Tatar къанджер, ханджер, гъанджер, Tatar хәнҗәр (xäncär), Yakut кынчаал (kıncaal). Related to Persian خنجر (xanjar).
