Etymology
editInherited from Middle Russian клеверъ (klever), itself borrowed in 16th or 17th c. from Middle Low German klēver, from Proto-West Germanic *klaibrā. Adopted by botanists, displaced local names like Петров крест and дятловина; кашка and трилистник are still occasionally used.
