Borrowed from Polish łaty or independently formed as a lemmatized plural of ла́та (láta, patch); in either case, ultimately from Proto-Slavic *lata, *olta (rag, cloth shred). First attested 16th century. Sense development: “leather armor with small metal plates (‘patches’) sown onto it for additional protection” → “cuirass of metal plate”.
