Pronunciation

edit
  • IPA(key): [ɐbnʲɪˈmatʲ]
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

edit

обнима́ть (obnimátʹimpf (perfective обня́ть or объя́ть)

  1. to hug, to embrace
  2. to engulf, to envelop

Usage notes

edit
  • In high-style and literary usage, this verb has a defective conjugation with a missing infinitive and a different present tense and imperative, the forms being from объима́ть (obʺimátʹ). The corresponding perfective in this style is объя́ть (obʺjátʹ).
  • This is more of a transitive verb in the sense of one person hugging another, and not necessarily a shared or mutual hug implied in the plural conjugations of the English verb (we hugged (each other), you hugged (each other), they hugged (each other), etc.). For implication of mutual hugging, see обнима́ться (obnimátʹsja).
