Etymology

Inherited from Old Ruthenian перепона (perepona), from Proto-Slavic *pȇrpona. Cognate with Belarusian перапо́на (pjerapóna), further with Old Church Slavonic прѣпона (prěpona), whence Russian препо́на (prepóna).

Equivalent to пере- (pere-) +‎ -по́на (-póna).
