Inherited from Old Ruthenian рѣчище (rěčišče), from Proto-Slavic *rěčišče. By surface analysis, рака́ (raká) +‎ -ішча (-išča). Compare Czech řečiště, Ukrainian рі́чище (ríčyšče).
