Inherited from Proto-Slavic *soldъkъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *salˀdus, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *seh₂l-. Compare to Slovene sládek, Bulgarian сладък (sladǎk), Macedonian сладок (sladok), Czech and Slovak sladký, Polish słodki, Russian сла́дкий (sládkij), Ukrainian солодкий (solodkyj), Lithuanian saldùs, Latvian salds.
