Etymology

From *qarčïğa(y) (hawk), from a Mongolic source (compare Mongolian харцага (xarcaga), Mongolian харцгай (xarcgaj, hawk)), which was earlier borrowed from a Turkic *qartïğa (hawk) (compare Khakas хартыға (xartığa), Tuvan хартыга (xartıga, falcon, hawk)), Tofa һартыға (falcon, hawk)).

Cognate with Kazakh қаршыға (qarşyğa, hawk), Kyrgyz карчыга (karcıga, hawk), Southern Altai карчага (karčaga, hawk), Uzbek qarchigʻay (hawk) Uyghur قارچىغا (qarchigha, hawk), etc.
