From Proto-Turkic *qaršu (opposite) (compare Old Turkic [script needed] (qaršu), Old Turkic [script needed] (qaršï, opposite)), from Proto-Turkic *kar- (opposite; be opposite, meet).

Cognate with Kazakh қарсы (qarsy), Kyrgyz каршы (karşı), Uzbek qarshi, Uyghur قارشى (qarshi), Azerbaijani qarşı, Turkish karşı (opposite, against).
