Etymology

Via an intermediary language, from Proto-Turkic *kudug (water well), from Proto-Turkic *kud- (to pour).

Compare with Old Uyghur [script needed] (quduğ, water well); Kazakh құдық (qūdyq), Kyrgyz кудук (kuduk), Uzbek quduq, Uyghur قۇدۇق (quduq), Shor қудуғ, Tuvan кудук (kuduk), Yakut кудук (kuduk).

The intermediary could have been a Mongolic language (compare Mongolian худаг (xudag, well)).

Compare ҡойо (qoyo), the native Kypchak development from the same archetype.
