From *özger- "to change", from Proto-Turkic *öŕ-ge (other, different).[1]

Cognate with Kazakh өзгеру (özgeru), Kyrgyz өзгөр- (özgör-), Southern Altai ӧскӧр- (öskör-), Uzbek oʻzgarmoq, Uyghur ئۆزگەرمەك (özgermek), Turkmen özgermek (to change).
