Etymology

edit

According to Martirosyan, who is slightly tweaking Klingenschmitt's etymology, from Proto-Indo-European *sl̥h₂-sḱ-ye- with Ancient Greek ἱλάσκομαι (hiláskomai) and perhaps Latin solor as cognates.

But according to Pokorny and J̌ahukyan, inherited from the Proto-Indo-European onomatopoeic root *el-, *ol-, on which see ողբ (ołb); J̌ahukyan reconstructs an intermediate form *oləkyō- with a question mark.

In any case closely related to աղօթք (ałōtʻkʻ, prayer).
