editFrom Proto-Indo-European *h₁r̥sen- (“male”). Cognates include Ancient Greek ἔρσην (érsēn), ἄρσην (ársēn, “male”), Avestan 𐬀𐬭𐬱𐬀𐬥- (aršan-, “man, male”), probably also Ancient Greek ἀρνειός (arneiós, “ram”).[1][2][3]
