Etymology

edit

J̌ahukyan prefers the meaning “package, parcel” and explains the word as a dialectal form of փաթեթ (pʻatʻetʻ) or its misspelling due to a dialectal pronunciation. For old dialectal variations he adduces the following examples from the Hellenizing School: ներբող (nerboł) instead of *ներփող (*nerpʻoł), ապաթարց (apatʻarcʻ) instead of *ապադարձ (*apadarj), the parallel forms ենթ- (entʻ-) vs ընդ (ənd), բաղ- (bał-) vs փաղ (pʻał). Later he added փլանիմ (pʻlanim) vs բլ- (bl-).
