editEtymology
editFrom Proto-Indo-European *teh₂- (“to melt; to flow, stream”), whence also թանամ (tʻanam, “to make wet”). Thus, literally “wet food”. Typologically compare the dialectal Armenian թացան (tʻacʻan, “dairy victuals eaten with bread”) from թաց (tʻacʻ, “wet”).
