From the root ס־ג־ס־ג (s-g-s-g). Like the noun סגסוגת (sagsóget, “alloy”), from סיג (sig, “dross, base metal”) through reduplication, in turn derived from סוג (sug, “kind, class”), with original verbal meaning of "to turn away, reject" as well as "to hem in, bind, fence in"..
