Etymology

From the earlier form آشاغه (aşağa), dative form of the unattested noun *آشاق (aşak, bottom of the mountain), which is found in Karakhanid اَشَقْ (aşaq). This word ultimately derives from Proto-Turkic *āš- (to cross a mountain, to surpass), the same root of آشمق (aşmak, to surpass) and آشیری (aşırı, extreme, immoderate).
