Etymology

edit

From Middle Persian [script needed] (āfritan), from Proto-Iranian *ā- + *fraiH- (to rejoice, atone, please). The former prefix is from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éd (to, at), and the latter component is from Proto-Indo-European *preyH- (to please; to love). Cognate with Sogdian ʾ'frytyy (āfrītē, creature).
