Etymology

edit

From a variant of بالنگ (bâlang, citron; cucumber) or بادرنگ (bâdrang, cucumber; lemon) +‎ مشک (mošk, moschus), compare the lemon-balm’s other common names وارنگ‌بو (vârang-bu, literally citron-smelling) and بادرنگ‌بویه (bâdrang-buye, literally cucumber-smelling or citron-smelling). The f-anlauting forms are understood as from فرنج (faranj, Frank) perceiving a “Frankish moschus, European moschus”.
