Inherited from Prakrit *𑀩𑀼𑀳𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀅 (*buhukkhaa), from Sanskrit *बुभुक्षक (bubhukṣaka, desiring to eat), a back-formation from बुभुक्षति (bubhukṣati, to desire to eat) + -अक (-aka, doer). By surface analysis, بُھوک (bhūk, hunger) +‎ ـا ().

Cognate with Braj भूखौ (bhūkhau).
