editFrom Middle Persian twhyg (tuhīg, “empty; vain, illusory; barren”), from Proto-Iranian *tuŝyás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tuŝćyás, from Proto-Indo-European *tus-sḱ-yós, from *tews- (“to be empty”). Cognate with Vedic Sanskrit तुच्छ्य (tucchyá).
