From Middle Persian 𐭤𐭫𐭢𐭥𐭱 (xar-gōš, rabbit, hare, literally big ear), equivalent to خر (xar) +‎ گوش (gôš). Compare Tajik харгӯш (xargüš), Talysh هووش, هوۊش (havüš), Pashto خرغوږ (xarğwaž), خرغوړ (xarğwaṛ), خرغوګ (xarğwag, mullein, literally big ear).
