دجر
Arabic
editEtymology 1
editUnknown, with analogs only in Modern South Arabian – Mehri ديجر (dēdžer, dēdžir, dīdžer), Shehri دجرة (dəgərɛt), collective دجر (dúgur, dúger), Soqotri دنجة (déngoh), collective دجر (dégər, dígir) – and Cushitic – shown as descendants here assuming they agglutinated the Arabic article. Maybe metathesized from Sanskrit दीर्घ (dīrgha, “long”) comparing Ancient Greek δόλιχος (dólikhos, “yardlong bean (Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis)”, literally “long”) likely calqued from India.
Noun
editدِجْر or دُجْر or دَجْر • (dijr or dujr or dajr) m
