Etymology 2

Likely a borrowed “culture word”, also found in Ugaritic 𐎀𐎄𐎗 (ảdr) and Old Assyrian 𒀜𒊒 (AD.RU /⁠adru⁠/) against Old Babylonian 𒈦𒃷 (maškanum) and 𒈠𒀝𒊏𒈾𒋾 (MA.AG.RA.NA.TI /⁠magrattu⁠/), which two only seem native Semitic coinage (equivalent to Arabic مَسْكَن (maskan) and جُرْن (jurn)).

From Akkadian 𒄑𒄟 (GEŠILDAG2 /⁠adāru, atāru, aṭāru⁠/, an indigenous tree, probably Populus euphratica); compare Hebrew אֶדֶר (ʾéḏer, a variety of tree), Ugaritic 𐎀𐎄𐎗 (ảdr, a variety of tree), Sumerian [script needed] (adar, a variety of tree or type of wood). Note also Old Armenian անտառ (antaṙ, forest).
