Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, from Ancient Greek βῡκᾰ́νη (būkánē, spiral trumpet, horn), from Latin būcina. The modern sense is a semantic loan from Arabic بُوق (būq) of which is derived as a phono-semantic matching.
