Ultimately derived from Phoenician 𐤉 (y, literally hand) through Classical Syriac; compare Hebrew יוֹ״ד, Arabic ياء (yāʔ) and Ancient Greek ἰῶτα (iôta). Doublet of ܐܝܼܕ݂ܵܐ (īḏā).
