Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀓𑀼𑀤𑁆𑀤𑀤𑀺 (*kuddadi), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀓𑀼𑀤𑁆𑀤𑀢𑀺 (*kuddati), probably from Dravidian. Compare Sanskrit कूर्द् (kūrd, to jump) and कूर्दति (kūrdati, jumps) (a Sanskritization of the Prakrit forms), and Tamil குதி (kuti). Cognate with Marathi कुदणे (kudṇe) and Gujarati કુદવું (kudvũ).
