घराना
Hindi
editEtymology
editInherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀖𑀭𑀸𑀬𑀬𑀡 (*gharāyayaṇa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-) from Sanskrit *घरायतन (gharāyatana), from *घर (ghara) + आयतन (āyátana), in which *घर (ghara) is a reborrowed Prakrit form of गृह (gṛhá), which is from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰr̥dʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰr̥dʰós, from *gʰerdʰ- (“to enclose”). Cognate with Punjabi ਘਰਾਨਾ (gharānā) / گھرانہ (ghrānh), Sindhi گھراڻو / घराणो, Marathi घराणे (gharāṇe), Nepali घरान् (gharān).
