editBorrowed from Classical Persian دیوانه (dēvāna), from Middle Persian [script needed] (dyw'nk' /dēwānag/, “demonic; crazy, insane”). Compare Gujarati દીવાનું (dīvānũ), Hindustani دِیوَانَہ (dīvāna) / दीवाना (dīvānā), Punjabi ਦਿਵਾਨਾ (divānā), ਦੀਵਾਨਾ (dīvānā) / دِیوانہ (dīvāna).
