पाहणे (pāhṇe) |
पहावणे (pahāvṇe) |
Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘰𑘜𑘹 (pāṇe), 𑘢𑘰𑘮𑘜𑘹 (pāhaṇe), 𑘢𑘰𑘮𑘰𑘜𑘹 (pāhāṇe). Beyond Old Marathi, there two possibilities:
- Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit [Term?], from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑁆𑀭𑀘𑀸𑀳𑀢𑀺 (*pracāhati, “to look for”), from *𑀘𑀸𑀳𑁆 (*cāh, “to want”).[1] This unattested root has reflexes in all branches of New Indo-Aryan, and also forms the basis for auxiliary markers of obligation or need (e.g. Hindi चाहिए (cāhie, “should”)) just as Marathi has पाहिजे (pāhije) from this verb. Thus, this is the most likely.
- Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit [Term?], from Sanskrit प्रभाति (prábhāti, “to shine forth, appear”).[2] This is phonologically and semantically plausible, but not as compelling as the first.
