Derived from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀚𑁆𑀚 (majja) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit मद्य (mádya), from Proto-Indo-European *m̥h₂d-yó-s, from *meh₂d- (to be wet). Cognate with Marathi माज (māj). Doublet of मद्य (madya).
