Etymology
editBorrowed from Dravidian, ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *yĀṭu (“goat, sheep”); for the semantic connection, note that early Indo-Aryan speakers (like the Yadu tribe) were pastoralists who reared cattle, goats and sheep. Cognate with Tamil ஆடு (āṭu), யாடு (yāṭu), Telugu ఏట (ēṭa) and Gondi యేటీ (yēṭī).
