editFrom Proto-Indo-Iranian *sawyás, from Proto-Indo-European *sewyós (“left, left-hand”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬌𐬌𐬀 (hauuiia, “left”), Proto-Slavic *šujь.
