editInherited from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀟𑀡𑁆𑀟 (*ḍaṇḍa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit দণ্ড (daṇḍa) with retroflexive assimilation. Cognate to Hindustani ڈنڈا / डंडा (ḍaṇḍā), Punjabi ਡੰਡਾ (ḍaṇḍā). Retroflex plosive reinforced by Hindustani influence.
