Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀯𑀳𑀺𑀬𑀸 (*vahiyā, accounts), from Sanskrit वहिका (vahikā, diary, ledger), a variant of वाहिका (vāhikā) (compounded in राजवाहिका (rājavāhikā, literally the bearer of (the records of) the king)), the feminine form of वाहक (vāhaka, bearer, carrier), a compound of वाह (vāha, carrying, from the root वह् (vah, to carry)) +‎ -क (-ka, agent suffix). Cognate to Assamese বহী (bohi), Odia ବହି (bahi), ବଇ (bai), Gujarati વહી (vahī), Hindi बही (bahī), Punjabi ਵਹੀ (vahī), ਬਹੀ (bahī), Sindhi وَهِي / वही, Marathi वही (vahī).
