Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀲𑀟𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*saḍakka), from earlier *𑀲𑀝𑀺𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*saṭikka) with assimilation of unstressed middle vowel, from 𑀲𑀝𑀺 (saṭi) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-), from Sanskrit सृति (sṛti). Cognate with Hindustani सड़क (saṛak).
