editInherited from Prakrit 𑀯𑀳𑀺𑀬𑀸 (vahiyā), from Sanskrit वहिका (vahikā, “diary, ledger”), a variant of वाहिका (vāhikā) (compounded in राजवाहिका (rājavāhikā, literally “the bearer of (the records of) the king”)), the feminine form of वाहक (vāhaka, “bearer, carrier”), a compound of वाह (vāha, “carrying”, from the root वह् (vah, “to carry”)) + -क (-ka, agent suffix). Cognate with Bengali বই (boi), Hindustani بہی / बही (bahī), Marathi वही (vahī).
