Borrowed from Hindi बन्दूक (bandūk, gun), from Arabic بُنْدُقِيَّة (bunduqiyya, rifle, gun). The original Arabic was بُنْدُق (bunduq) and denoted filberts, nuts shaped like the projectiles thrown from stone bows.
