Etymology 1

From Proto-Tai *tranᴬ (“to see”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩢ᩠ᨶ (han), Lao ເຫັນ (hen), Lü ᦠᧃ (ḣan), Tai Dam ꪹꪬꪸꪙ, Shan ႁၼ် (hǎn), Tai Nüa ᥞᥢᥴ (hán), Aiton ꩭꩫ် (han), Ahom 𑜑𑜃𑜫 (han), Bouyei ranl, Zhuang raen, Nong Zhuang taen.
