Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r-ka(ː)m (“lip; mouth; edge; bank”) (STEDT), whence also Old Chinese 磡 (OC *kʰuːms, “embankment”); see there for more.

The "pass, give" sense is separated from the "coast" sense by MED, though STEDT (source: Benedict 76 WBur, entry: kâm "give, transmit") apparently considers them related; how the two senses are connected, if they indeed are related and this was not a clerical error on STEDT's part, is unclear, but may be along the lines of "coast" > "boundary for trading ships" > "transmit (goods, etc.)".
