Either from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *paŋ ~ *pak (side) (whence Old Chinese (OC *baːŋ, “side”)) or Pali bhāga (part, portion, fraction, share, etc.); in the latter case, cognate with Thai ภาค (pâak).
