မြန်မာ

Etymology

edit

Uncertain. Perhaps from Sanskrit ब्रह्मादेश (brahmādeśa, country of Brahma), a compound of ब्रह्मा (brahmā, Brahma) + देश (deśa, country) or from a Proto-Sino-Tibetan root related to Chinese  / (mán, barbarian) and Tibetan བྲན (bran, servant, slave). Historical alternative spellings include မြမ္မာ (mramma) and မြံမာ (mramma). See also Proto-Austroasiatic *mraʔ (person).
