editCognate with Lashi [script needed] (-ˀu, “cotton”) (Hill 2019, p. 68) with further origin uncertain. Not given etymology by STEDT (wa "cotton"), while Luce adduces Tibetan བལ (bal, “wool”) as a cognate.[1] Note also similarities to Vietnamese vải (“cloth, fabric”).
